I wrote a big rant, but it got deleted. Short version: VUW isn't my family, and they made that clear when I came out. Long version: my IP rights aren't a joke, and nor is my trans identity. - I genuinely believe that many people in Wellington attempted to detransition me, and I consider that to be a form of conversion therapy. We could go for hours on the specifics, but suffice to say that outing my proclivities for kink and trans porn allowed people to find my profiles and push me to 'go straight.' First on BDSMLR, then DeviantArt. Plus I'm sure that the GCSB has my search history. Everyone involved in that should hang their heads in shame. - Here's what I want to hear: 'you're a valid human being, regardless of whether you pass' 'We'll defend you from anti-trans people, rather than believing them' 'We understand why you're defensive, particularly given notes over songs that weren't in the Weeded Out script and actually required a separate licensing agreement.' 'We understand that despite your successful 'audition' with the Big Smoke, the stresses of being the queen were simply too much for you.' 'We're willing to negotiate for the script, and to get one of our queens to be Tim/Tina because Amanda refuses to do so.' 'We understand why you don't want to perform, lord knows that you've done enough of that to last two lifetimes thanks to all this GCSB, SIS and local interest in your affairs, and that the humiliating and wrong conclusions that were drawn by us, the townspeople, actively harmed your wellbeing. We understand that this obsession of ours with your sexuality led you to become suicidal.' 'It's ok to want to spite people that thought you were a paedo' 'It was ok to rant on your phone, particularly given the surveillance state that you've been existing in since Covid. Like, literally since February 2020. Those rants probably saved you from a much worse fate, and by continuing to rant you're simply defending your hard-won material that you wrote while they watched.' 'Conversion therapy is illegal, and we will cease attempting to convert you, even though we know that you can't realistically press charges given that the Internet is anonymous' - Here's what I don't want to hear: 'Just do it.' - I'm not a Nike ad. 'Don would've done it' - no, he wouldn't have. He formed the Mutton Birds instead. 'You owe Michelle' - no. Stephen wrote about her too, and she wrote about us as well. Creative communities are founded on telling stories about your mates. 'Do Tina or you'll never have a career' - that's a threat, not an enticement. Frankly, my career has done just fine without the NZ Film Commission or TVNZ. I've made a feature that was good, another arty feature that was ok, and I've made a number of successful short films. Plus my Dakumentary, which RNZ and Newshub were super about supporting!👍 'We love you now' - yeah, but you told me I was a sick freak until 2023. I remember the bad old days of being treated like I was autistic, and that failed to make me happy.
'VUW needs your help' - yeah, then pay me for my draft.
'Direct with the students' - no, that was our main takeaway from POAK: no students. 'We'll pay your salary in just 3 years, after you get that PhD and have done countless hours of underpaid tutoring work to lighten our loads' - such an insult! 'Play the game' - no. I never played it, and people like me for that. 'serve your community' - frankly, that's why I'm an activist, not an actor. Safe consumption centre = serving the community. Tina = serving myself, and pretending as if that's serving the community. Tina won't solve homelessness. Tina won't solve the housing crisis. Tina won't make it ok to be trans in any other city, and frankly I survived Wellington with the hatred, so anyone that is as determined as me will survive regardless. - Tina won't solve poverty, except for maybe mine. You all feel guilty because you've got decent jobs with VUW and that's not my reality. It's their fault. They've treated me really shabbily. I get to say no, and VUW ceases and simply accepts that 2024 and Tina is a no-go. I need the peace of mind. - 'just do the love story, but cut the drug use, cut the sex, and cut Tina .. be robert' - no. That's why I refuse to license Tina to VUW or Paddy Gower. Their ideas suck. All of the NZSM faculty with trans kids have cost themselves that opportunity to show their kids that there's a future because they refuse to accept my validity. I'm valid regardless of whether VUW confers another degree upon me. All I want is for the NZSM to leave me alone this year. Try it: leave me alone for 2024. I wanted it to push towards an AO/R16 rating. That was my goal for that screenplay, while Shipwrecked 2030 is the PG/M script. So instead of quibbling with all the sex, drugs and folk songs that made Tina compelling, how about doing my family-friendly war romp?
There's no sex in Shipwrecked. There's only cannabis use.
Weeded Out had cannabis use, MDMA use, mentions of psilocybin and LSD, salvia and a psychedelic sex scene that I wanted to be a fully explicit thing.

To the industry:
Essentially, I don't want the pros to show me how. My entire career could be interpreted as a sustained aesthetic critique of the media in Aotearoa. That was the explicit goal of Fresh Culture, and I think Bad Man too.
I wanted to make a cheap, dirty indie about my life, not some marquee production.
While if we're going to get amped up and do my 2030 movie, that's awesome!
As for NZ Opera: well, if the Perfumed Garden pans out, then I'll get in touch. Though, bluntly, I could go to Wellington Opera also. I don't mind Alex Galvin.
