Brain dropping:
Theorists who are saying 'everything is political' have got it the wrong way around in my humble view.
A more positive framing would be 'everything is creative [ie dramatic!]'
Hannah Arendt's view of the 'political' radically encompasses virtually all of public life, and in that sense I think she's onto something. -
Our public selves are, of necessity, limited self-presentations.
No single public appearance 'event' or 'social role performance' can encompass the sum total of lived experience and modes of being an individual is familiar enough with to perform in a (socially convincing) manner, which is why we use clothing/fashion as an intricate gesturing system to suggest what we're trying to be.
Politics is - in my experience - a (rather poor) bastardisation of live theatre, and we would do best to apply the lens and lessons of dramatic theory to political theatre instead of applying the lens and lessons of political theory to dramatic theatre.
In sum: 'Life is a cabaret, old chum!'
