Stuff gave this a great review, so I checked it out. It wasn’t all that good. Writing was good, the filming was shit and the acting also shit, though I appreciated the use of Chinese.
I think all these NZ sitcoms are exactly the same as each other, and that’s what bores me about them. This was pretty much identical to Kid Sister.
I loved the Creamerie. I thought Kid Sister was ok, but Homebound made me laugh more - I like high-concept premises and ripped-from-the-headlines TV.

On my soapbox: I thought my rant from a few months ago rang true while watching this - the self-consciousness with which the TV execs in NZ are trying to target demographics with these novelty sitcoms about marginalised communities is very cynical imo, and reflects a country which produces relatively few programs (rather than one with a thriving scripted TV industry).
I wish we had an equivalent to the cable networks in the States, but Sky doesn't fund much original scripted content; I think that NZ TV often feels somewhat sterile in comparison with the R16 and R18 content that floods the global market.
If people want to see nudity and mature dramas in Aotearoa, they usually go to plays or operas. The advantage of being indie is that I can do my highly NSFW pieces and pull the middle fingers to the censors by distributing online.
I've never really thought of myself as being in competition with the TV people via my Facebook webseries, but I suppose that I am... that's odd. 🤣
