Re: Passenger Rail

I had a thought just now - it was rather paradoxical to protest in Welly when we have passenger rail here. Personally, I thought the stunts had merit. The ‘81 tour protestors used those tactics - Pātu shows them blocking the Welly motorway with a gaggle of protestors. - I think it's important to break the law from time to time as an activist. Particularly when one is protesting an unfair law. It’s a fine line to ride: Aotearoa-NZ is a cool place because we have a long tradition of protest, but also a long tradition of suppressing dissent. I try to mix-and-match the old/new activism ideologies, and that's why I'm a mix of SJW and old-fashioned street theatre activism. -

I greatly admired the hunger strikes at Parliament. Gary knows those guys, so I met Ollie Langridge once.

My first therapist was one of that group as well, but Rick isn’t taking new patients atm 👁️ - Activist-to-activist feedback: The ‘glued to the tracks’ thing is something I think is dumb, but plenty of environmental activists dig that stunt. ‘chained to the machinery’ is one that I like, though I dunno if I’d do that: my songs are my protest; smoking weed at the train station is like my version of those tactics. ☘️ Because my protest involves smoking an illegal plant, I tend to think breaking the law is justified, though usually I play by the rules because I was raised to follow them as a white-bread kid who never once had a detention (though I was a smartarse punk in high school as well). 👍 - I totes think that the left throws too much shade on whichever radical activist group they detest… for example, I’m not a fan of Extinction Rebellion, and wrote an editorial to that effect in 2019. Today, though, I think that their tactics seem more necessary; I was also vocally anti-occupation when that was happening… my brother was the one who made that Fresh Culture documentary, and I think he's pissed because he reckons my Barry song was a slam on him. I also think he probably thought that about What's The Use of Wond'rin' … his emails were tinged with that energy. - Re: Shipwrecked - that’s an observational song. I wasn’t advocating violence, merely observing the vibes that were already there by that point of the Covid era. 👍 _ As for my supposed clout and mana from my 2020 Ad campaign: I realise I inhabit a pretty niche area, as drug protestors are seen as ‘less serious’ than social justice or environmental groups, but the stats speak for themselves about why Drug Law Reform is an important issue. As for Gender Equality: well, my trans fight is a gender equality issue (‘stop all forms of gender discrimination’ lol) and yes, the pay gap is also a trans issue, as the median salary for trans people is $15-20,000. Plus yes, the Women’s Rights track record that I have. 👍⚧️☘️ - extra, extra .. trans news: I filled out the new Counting Ourselves on the train today; I'm proud to be contributing to that research by Dr Veale.
