Yet another reminder of how arts funding screws me over: I finally have a good feature, but because I ran the Facebook Ads, it isn't eligible for the NZ Film Festival. Dak Headroom needs sound work, and being part of the festival would have likely helped pry some money from the Film Commission. I got the sense when we did meet with the Commission (years ago) that political films aren't something they typically fund. The regulations are also why Portrait of a Knight never screened at the film festival: our VoD release after they rejected the rough cut in 2018. - That's my first gripe: then my second gripe is with CNZ. 1. My sort of movie isn't something the Film Commission touches, but it's still NZ art and provides insight into communities. 2. It ticks me off that there's this 'immaculate conception' philosophy, whereby projects which haven't begun are easier to raise funds for, rather than something which is part of the way through. I think that's true for NZ on Air and APRA as well, and it's probably why I've never been funded.
