Trip to the British Isles (part 2)

13 August 2022 (Stephen) Today we went to Edinburgh Castle where we saw some dungeons, a chapel, a great hall which had several weapons, the Scottish Crown Jewels and a giant cannon which took 30 men to carry 30 miles. The Scottish used the cannon to bombard castles but being Scottish they would go and get there stone cannon balls to fire them again.

It was pouring with rain.

14 August 2002 (Michael) Today we went to Hadrians Wall and Vindolanda. Hadrians wall once had Roman Legions walking on it and at lunch time went to Vindolanda car park and had lunch. Later we went to Vindolanda. Where we saw parts of a reconstructed fort, an excavation, a rebuilt temple and house, a shop and a museum with pottery shoes and roman clothes. We also saw animals bones.

Mum was sleeping (she had been doing so when we arrived at the car park and went back to sleep after lunch) then we went back.

Today we went to Hadrian's Wall, which was built by Emperor Hadrian of the Romans. It was interesting because as you can climb on it as roman soldiers did in ancient times. It was a quarry. They had to stop quarrying it in 1940 because they were afraid that the wall would be reduced to dust.

Then we went to a Roman fort where we saw what the fort would have looked in Roman times as well as excavations that they were doing at the moment they had a lot of reconstruction of how things used to look.

15 August 2002 (Michael)

We then re-crossed the Channel arriving back in Calais. We drove to a Formula UN Hotel where we went to sleep. I vomited (to mums displeasure) after having slept on an air mattress in the hope that I would get cooler.

I had motion sickness as a kid, particularly when facing the back rather than the front. Still bugs me today...

19 August 2002 (Stephen) Today we went to Westminster Abbey. At the abbey we saw a throne, the grave of Geoffrey Chaucer, The grave of Mary Queen of Scots, the Grave of Henry Tudor and the grave of Elizabeth I.

20 August 2002 (Michael) After having packed we set off to Milan and Italy via Belgium (we had breakfast), Luxembourg (Lunch), Germany a.k.a. Detuschland (dinner) and Switzerland (supper).

20 August 2002 (Stephen) Today we left Calais at 9:30 PM. We set off for home going through Belgium, Luxembourg, back in France, Germany, Switzerland then Italy. In Belgium we had breakfast, in Luxembourg we had lunch and in Deutschland (Germany) dinner, then home through Switzerland and Italy. When I finally got to bed at 2:30am.

I'm not sure if it was intentional, but my Dad found the whole breakfast, lunch, and dinner in different countries thing really funny, and would often make jokes about it.

Didn't take any photos that day, which was mostly spent on the road.

Re: Switzerland. Dad went to a work conference in Geneva during the OE, and we went as well, only to discover that a fried chicken meal was 40 Euro. That's some insane price inflation!

KFC wasn't sold in Italy, and neither was sliced bread (other than 'American' sliced bread), so my Mum bought a breadmaker.
